According to reporting from CNN, Neera Tanden will serve as a senior adviser to President Joe Biden.
Tanden will begin planning for potential policy changes that could result from the forthcoming US Supreme Court decision on Republican legal efforts to strike down the Affordable Care Act.
A long-time health policy expert, she worked in former President Barack Obama’s administration as the act was designed and implemented.
Earlier this year, Tanden withdrew from consideration to lead the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) after she faced backlash over tweets she wrote about Republicans and progressive Democrats.
“Neera’s intellect, tenacity, and political savvy will be an asset to the Biden administration as she assumes a new role as Senior Advisor to the President,” John Podesta, founder and director of the Center for American Progress, said. “While we will be sorry to lose her considerable policy expertise and leadership at the Center for American Progress — an organization which we founded together in 2003 — I am exceptionally thrilled to see her step into a new position serving this White House and the American people.”
Tanden compared Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to Harry Potter villain Voldemort and Senator Ted Cruz to a vampire. She also tweeted that Senator Bernie Sanders benefited from Russian hacking in the 2016 election. All of the tweets have since been deleted.
