President-elect Donald Trump has once again suggested that the United States pursue ownership of Greenland, reigniting a diplomatic controversy over the self-governing territory.
In a statement on Sunday announcing his pick for U.S. ambassador to Denmark, Trump described U.S. control of Greenland as an “absolute necessity” for national security and global freedom.
“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump stated. “Ken [Howery] will do a wonderful job in representing the interests of the United States.”
Greenland Prime Minister Múte Egede swiftly rejected the idea, issuing a statement via Facebook:
“Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our year-long struggle for freedom. However, we must continue to be open to cooperation and trade with the whole world, especially with our neighbors.”
Denmark and Greenland Stand Firm
Denmark, which retains sovereignty over Greenland, echoed its position from 2019 when Trump first floated the idea of purchasing the island. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who called the proposal “absurd” during Trump’s first administration, offered no new comments. However, her office affirmed Denmark’s commitment to transatlantic cooperation.
“The Danish Government is looking forward to welcoming the new American ambassador,” Frederiksen’s office said in a statement. “As far as statements about Greenland, we refer to the Premier of Greenland, who has made it clear that Greenland is not for sale but open for cooperation.”
Strategic and Economic Interests in Greenland
Greenland, the world’s largest island, holds significant strategic and economic value. The U.S. operates the Pituffik Space Base, the northernmost Department of Defense installation, and has invested in Greenland’s economic development. A $12 million aid package during Trump’s first administration was directed toward developing the island’s natural resources, including rare earth metals, uranium, and coal.
Despite Greenland’s mineral wealth, its challenging geography and climate have hampered large-scale commercial mining. However, U.S. officials have cited the island’s importance amid increased Arctic activity by China and Russia.
Ambassador Howery’s Appointment
Trump’s nominee for ambassador to Denmark, PayPal co-founder Ken Howery, previously served as U.S. ambassador to Sweden. While Howery avoided addressing Trump’s Greenland comments, he expressed enthusiasm for his new role.
“Representing our great nation abroad is a profound responsibility,” Howery said in a social media post. “I look forward to working with the dedicated teams at U.S. Embassy Copenhagen and U.S. Consulate Nuuk in Greenland to deepen the bonds between our countries.”
Future Implications
Trump’s renewed focus on Greenland underscores the island’s geopolitical importance but also highlights potential diplomatic tensions. Greenland’s leaders remain resolute in their autonomy, reiterating their openness to trade and cooperation while firmly rejecting any notion of a sale.
