Today Is Deadline To Register To Vote In California Recall Election

Today is the deadline to register to get a ballot in for the California recall election.

Registered voters should have already received their mail-in ballots. As of this week, about 2.8 million ballots, or 13% of the approximate 22 million ballots sent out to Californians, have been returned, according to a tracker by Poltical Data Inc.

The last day to vote in the recall election is Sept. 14, 2021.

It’s a special election held after a recall Governor Gavin Newsom petition reached more than 1.6 million verified signatures.

The ballot will first ask if Newsom should be recalled (or removed from office). Voters can select ‘yes’ or ‘no’ for this.

It will also ask who should replace him.

A majority vote is required on the first question for the governor to be recalled. The candidate with the most votes on the second question would win the election; no majority required.

Recall supporters said Newsom mishandled the state’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, did not do enough to address the state’s homelessness rate, and supported sanctuary city policies and water rationing.

In a March 2021 response, Newsom called the effort a “Republican recall — backed by the RNC, anti-mask and anti-vax extremists, and pro-Trump forces who want to overturn the last election and have opposed much of what we have done to fight the pandemic.”
