In a bold move, former US Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn, a prominent figure in the aftermath of the January 6, 2021, attack, has confirmed his candidacy for Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District. Dunn, who testified about the events of January 6 to the House select committee, hopes to bring his unique perspective and commitment to democracy to Capitol Hill in a new role.

Dunn, having served as a Capitol Police officer for 15 years, continued to work until recently. Despite the trauma of January 6, he decided to run for Congress, citing concerns about the potential reelection of former President Donald Trump. Dunn believes that, as a congressman, he can play a crucial role in holding Trump accountable and safeguarding democracy.

His motivation stems from his firsthand experience of witnessing democracy under attack on January 6. According to Dunn, “It’s no exaggeration to say we are one election away from the extinction of our democracy as we know it right now.”

Dunn, alongside other officers, testified in July 2021, vividly describing the violent scenes during the Capitol insurrection. He highlighted the desperate hand-to-hand fighting between law enforcement and rioters, recounting the use of various weapons and racist taunts directed at him. Dunn revealed that more than 20 people called him racial slurs, emphasizing the unique challenges faced by Black officers during the attack.

Receiving the Congressional Gold Medal in December 2022 and the Presidential Citizens Medal on January 6, 2023, Dunn’s courage and commitment have been widely recognized. However, he believes that running for Congress is the next step in his fight for accountability, justice, and the preservation of democracy.

Dunn’s decision to enter the political arena comes after the announcement by Rep. John Sarbanes, a Democrat, that he would not seek reelection, creating an open Congressional seat in Maryland. Dunn expressed his interest in running, stating on social media, “I see there is going to be an open Congressional seat in Maryland.”

If successful, Dunn would join a select group of individuals who transitioned from Capitol Police officers to members of Congress. He notes, “The late Harry Reid was a Capitol Police Officer. So, I guess I don’t mind being second to him.”

As Dunn enters the crowded field of Democratic hopefuls for Sarbanes’ seat, the primary on May 14, 2023, will determine the party’s candidate for the general election. Dunn’s candidacy adds a unique perspective shaped by his experiences on January 6 and a commitment to addressing the challenges facing the nation.
