Biden Dismisses Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Weather Control Claims Amid Hurricane Milton

President Joe Biden shot down false claims propagated by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., regarding the government’s alleged ability to control the weather, during televised remarks on Wednesday as Hurricane Milton neared Florida.

Biden called Greene’s claim “ridiculous” and stressed the need to counteract disinformation, particularly in moments of crisis. “Marjorie Taylor Greene, the congresswoman from Georgia, is now saying the federal government is literally controlling the weather,” Biden said during his remarks from the White House. “It’s beyond ridiculous. It’s so stupid. It’s got to stop.”

Greene has suggested on social media that the government is controlling hurricanes and other weather events. “Yes, they can control the weather. It’s ridiculous for anyone to lie and say it can’t be done,” she wrote last week on X (formerly Twitter).

Biden’s remarks came as Hurricane Milton was expected to make landfall in Florida, posing catastrophic risks to the region. He called out the spread of disinformation, which he said could hinder recovery efforts in the wake of such disasters, adding that “reckless, irresponsible, and relentless promotion of disinformation” threatens public safety.

In response to Greene’s comments, Rep. Carlos Giménez, R-Fla., countered her claim, writing, “Humans cannot create or control hurricanes. Anyone who thinks they can, needs to have their head examined.”

The controversy began after Greene reiterated her theory, citing a 1972 Weather Modification Act and claiming that there were over 1,000 instances of weather modification recorded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Greene falsely implied that government-controlled weather events could lead to damages for which citizens should be compensated.

Biden also used his remarks to dismiss other conspiracy theories surrounding Hurricane Helene, which recently devastated parts of the Southeast. “Assertions have been made that property is being confiscated. That’s simply not true,” Biden said. He also debunked claims that FEMA’s disaster relief funds were being redirected to migrants, calling them “ridiculous” and “untrue.”

Biden emphasized the importance of accurate information during crises. “They’re saying people impacted by these storms will receive $750 in cash and no more. That’s simply not true,” he said, referring to another false claim about federal aid. He also pointed to FEMA’s efforts to set up a website to address rampant misinformation.

While Greene has drawn attention with her outlandish statements, Biden’s administration has remained focused on the federal response to the natural disasters. During a virtual briefing Wednesday, Biden highlighted the efforts of federal agencies working to support communities ahead of Hurricane Milton’s impact. He noted that his conversations with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis had been productive and focused on recovery efforts.

“All I can tell you is I’m talking to Gov. DeSantis. He’s been very gracious; he’s thanked me for all we’ve done,” Biden said, referring to their cooperation following Hurricane Helene.

Greene’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and no further clarification was provided on her claims. Meanwhile, Biden urged Americans to remain focused on facts and ensure safety during the looming hurricane threat.
