AZ Man Sentenced For Threatening To Kill House Speaker Nancy Pelosi

An Arizona man was sentenced Friday to 21 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release after he threatened to kill House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Steven Arthur Martis of Bullhead City was found guilty last November of one count of communicating an interstate threat to kill or harm Pelosi, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

On January 17, 2021, Martis called Speaker Pelosi’s Washington District Office from his residence in Bullhead City, Arizona, and left two voicemails.

In his first voicemail, Martis threatened, “I’m coming to kill you . . . .” Martis followed up with a second voicemail, in which he advised, “You’re dead . . . .” Martis made these two calls after the Federal Bureau of Investigation had approached him and warned him about making similar calls in the past.

Martis is the second man to be sentenced to prison for threats against the Speaker in just a few months.

In December, a North Carolina man was sentenced to more than two years in federal prison for threatening the Speaker.

That man, Cleveland Meredith Jr., a Trump supporter from Hayesville, North Carolina, drove to Washington, D.C. to participate in the attacks on January 6, 2021, but didn’t make it until after the rioters had been dispersed due to car trouble.

He sent concerning text messages to family members with threats about Pelosi and Washington, D.C. mayor Muriel Bowser. The next day, he texted his uncle he was “Thinking about heading over to Pelosi C****’s speech and putting a bullet in her noggin on Live TV.”

The judge also ordered Meredith to participate in mental health and drug treatment.
