President Donald Trump on Friday formally unveiled a new Air Force One aircraft gifted by the Qatari government, announcing that the luxury Boeing 747 will headline a major July 4 flyover celebrating the United States’ 250th anniversary.
Standing before the newly modified aircraft at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington, Trump praised the jet as an unmatched symbol of American prestige and said it would play a central role in Independence Day celebrations.
“Nobody tops this one, and that’s the way we have to have it for our country. Nobody even comes close,” Trump said after descending the aircraft’s staircase during a public ceremony.
The customized Boeing 747 features a striking red, white and dark-blue paint scheme, replacing the lighter blue design associated with previous presidential aircraft. Trump described the plane as “the largest and the greatest in every aspect” and said it would serve as a “flying White House at a level of luxury no one has ever seen before.”
Plane to Lead America 250 Flyover
Trump said the aircraft will lead a large-scale military flyover over Washington on July 4 as part of the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration.
“The likes of which we’ve never seen before,” Trump said of the planned aerial display, which will include a variety of military aircraft.
The president also suggested his recent return flight from the Group of Seven summit in France would likely be his final trip aboard the current Air Force One fleet before transitioning to the new aircraft.
Gift Sparks Ethical and Security Concerns
The aircraft’s origins have generated significant controversy in Washington.
The Boeing 747 was provided by the government of Qatar and is estimated to be worth approximately $400 million. However, aviation experts say the total cost to taxpayers could be substantially higher once extensive security modifications, communications systems, defensive countermeasures and presidential transport requirements are factored in.
Some experts estimate the overall conversion project could exceed $1 billion.
The arrangement has drawn criticism from both Democrats and Republicans, who have questioned whether accepting such a high-value gift from a foreign government raises ethical, constitutional and national security concerns.
Despite those concerns, the Trump administration has defended the arrangement, arguing that the aircraft ultimately serves U.S. government purposes.
Future Role Beyond Trump’s Presidency
While the jet will be used for official presidential travel, White House officials have said it will eventually be transferred to Trump’s presidential library foundation after he leaves office.
That planned transfer has fueled additional debate among ethics watchdogs and political opponents, who argue that a foreign-funded aircraft could ultimately benefit Trump’s post-presidency legacy operation.
Air Force Says Aircraft Ready for Service
In a statement Friday, the U.S. Air Force said the aircraft — officially designated the VC-25B Bridge — is ready to begin “initial commissioning flights” to verify its operational readiness and ensure it can safely transport the president.
The Air Force described the jet as a “secure, modified executive platform” that will help alleviate demands on the current presidential fleet.
The Air Force One designation applies to any aircraft carrying the president. Currently, two modified Boeing 747s serve as the primary presidential transport aircraft.
Officials said the addition of the new aircraft will provide greater flexibility and capacity as the administration prepares for a series of major national events tied to America’s 250th anniversary celebration.
