Former President Donald Trump issued a stark warning on Saturday, threatening to imprison anyone who engages in what he deems “unscrupulous behavior” during the 2024 presidential election.
The former president, who frequently repeats debunked claims of widespread fraud during the 2020 election, escalated his rhetoric with broad threats of prosecution, vowing harsh penalties for those involved.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump declared, “The 2024 Election, where Votes have just started being cast, will be under the closest professional scrutiny and, WHEN I WIN, those people that CHEATED will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Law, which will include long term prison sentences so that this Depravity of Justice does not happen again.” He went on to accuse Democrats of engaging in “rampant Cheating and Skullduggery,” repeating claims of a stolen election that have been consistently disproven.
The former president further specified that his threat extended not only to candidates and voters but also to a wide array of individuals involved in the election process. “Please beware that this legal exposure extends to Lawyers, Political Operatives, Donors, Illegal Voters, & Corrupt Election Officials,” Trump wrote. “Those involved in unscrupulous behavior will be sought out, caught, and prosecuted at levels, unfortunately, never seen before in our Country.”
Trump’s statements mark one of the most aggressive warnings he has issued since losing the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden. While Trump has long targeted political opponents, such as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during his 2016 campaign, his recent remarks go further, encompassing a broader spectrum of people involved in the election process, including donors and election workers.
This rhetoric follows a pattern seen in the months leading up to the 2020 election when Trump repeatedly issued warnings of election interference. His post-election claims culminated in the January 6th, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, when a pro-Trump mob sought to block the certification of President Biden’s victory. Trump’s continued promotion of election fraud claims, despite their widespread debunking, has raised concerns about the safety of election officials across the country.
Two of the most prominent targets of these claims were Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and her daughter, Shaye Moss, who were falsely accused by Trump and his allies of participating in election fraud. The accusations resulted in significant harassment and threats against the two women, dramatically disrupting their lives.
Since the 2020 election, election workers nationwide have reported facing increased threats and intimidation. Trump’s latest comments have renewed concerns that similar incidents could occur during the 2024 race, putting election officials, volunteers, and others in the process at risk.
In a speech on Saturday in Wisconsin, Trump emphasized the Republican Party’s focus on preventing what he described as “cheating” in elections. He told his supporters that stopping Democrats from interfering in the election would secure his victory without further campaigning. “We gotta stop the cheating. If we stop that cheating, if we don’t let them cheat, I don’t even have to campaign anymore,” Trump said. “We’re going to win by so much. In the meantime, too big to rig, too big to rig.”
Following his 2020 defeat, Trump and his allies launched dozens of legal challenges to the election results, none of which succeeded in overturning the outcome. As Trump makes similar claims ahead of the 2024 race, many Democrats and election experts fear that he is once again laying the groundwork to cast doubt on the results if he loses.
Some Republican-controlled states have taken steps to tighten voting regulations, claiming these measures are intended to prevent fraud, though opponents argue they are aimed at suppressing voter turnout. Democrats fear that Trump’s legal team is preparing to challenge the results in battleground states, regardless of the outcome, raising concerns about the integrity of the election.
As the 2024 race ramps up, Trump’s comments signal that election integrity will remain a central theme of his campaign. Whether his aggressive rhetoric will further polarize voters or affect the conduct of the election remains to be seen, but his threats of prosecution have already intensified the already heated political atmosphere.
