President-elect Donald Trump announced Tuesday the creation of a new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a special advisory agency designed to reduce federal bureaucracy and streamline government spending. The department will be led by tech billionaire Elon Musk and conservative entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, both of whom supported Trump during his campaign.
The DOGE initiative marks Trump’s first major effort to reform government operations in his second term, aiming to identify and dismantle inefficient spending and regulatory excess across federal agencies. The choice of Musk, known for his ventures in SpaceX, Tesla, and social media, and Ramaswamy, the CEO of biotech and financial firms and a rising conservative activist, signals a shift toward private-sector perspectives in public administration.
“Elon and Vivek bring unparalleled innovation and fresh thinking to the table. With their help, we’re going to take a sledgehammer to wasteful government bureaucracy,” Trump said in a statement shared on social media. “DOGE will exist outside of Government and provide advice to the White House on overhauling our bloated federal agencies.”
The acronym DOGE, a nod to the internet meme and cryptocurrency associated with Musk, has stirred both curiosity and amusement. However, Trump clarified that the department’s purpose is serious, with a goal of concluding its work by July 4, 2026, when it will submit final recommendations for a leaner, more efficient government.
By establishing DOGE as an external advisory agency, Trump effectively sidesteps the traditional confirmation process required for government officials, allowing Musk and Ramaswamy to continue their work in the private sector while advising the White House. This arrangement enables them to avoid the lengthy Senate approval process, maintaining greater independence from congressional oversight.
This structure has sparked early debate, with some critics questioning the impact of such concentrated external influence on public policy. However, Trump’s team argues that the unique arrangement grants Musk and Ramaswamy the flexibility needed to conduct a thorough, unfettered review of federal agency budgets and operations.
Ramaswamy shared his thoughts on the initiative in a statement, saying, “America’s government agencies are like massive corporations—each one has inefficiencies and unnecessary costs. The Department of Government Efficiency will bring an entrepreneurial mindset to streamline operations.”
Musk, who has long advocated for simplified regulation, tweeted Tuesday that he is “honored to lead this groundbreaking effort with President Trump” and added that his focus will be on “maximizing efficiency, eliminating redundancy, and freeing up taxpayer dollars for better uses.”
The department is expected to begin its work immediately following Trump’s inauguration in January, and its recommendations could shape policy changes across various sectors, from energy to healthcare to defense.
