President Biden, Jill Biden Visit Uvalde, Texas After School Shooting

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden visited Uvalde, Texas, Sunday to sympathize with relatives and survivors of the latest mass shooting in the United States, following the killing last week of 19 school children and their two teachers.

The Bidens walked past the floral tributes to the victims outside Robb Elementary School, often pausing to touch the cardboard cutout pictures of each of the 21 victims and read their names.

While the Bidens paid their tributes, the U.S. Justice Department announced that at the request of Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin, it would conduct a review of the police response to Tuesday’s attack on the school, “to identify lessons learned and best practices to help first responders prepare for and respond to active shooter events.”

This was Biden’s second trip within weeks to comfort a community affected by such a loss. The president had visited Buffalo, New York, on May 17 to meet with families of victims after a shooter killed 10 Black people at a supermarket.

“We have to stand stronger. We must stand stronger. We cannot outlaw tragedy, I know, but we can make America safer,” Biden said on Saturday, at a commencement address at the University of Delaware.

The trip to the memorial was followed by Mass at a local Catholic church and meetings with victims’ families and first responders. Biden also met with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott at the airport.

Someone shouted “do something” at Biden as he departed the church service.

Biden responded: “We will.”
