Pete Hegseth Fights to Save Defense Secretary Nomination Amid Controversy

Pete Hegseth, Donald Trump’s nominee for defense secretary, fiercely defended his candidacy on Wednesday amid growing concerns about past misconduct allegations, including sexual assault and excessive drinking.

While Trump’s transition team explored alternatives, such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Hegseth maintained he was “not backing down one bit.”

“I spoke to the president this morning. He supports me fully. We’re not going anywhere,” Hegseth told reporters on Capitol Hill after meeting with lawmakers. In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Hegseth denied the allegations and highlighted his service with veterans’ organizations, stating, “I’m ready to lead the Pentagon with honor and integrity.”

Despite Hegseth’s confidence, the Trump team has begun vetting possible replacements. DeSantis, who competed against Trump in the 2024 primaries, is a leading contender, while Rep. Michael Waltz, Trump’s national security adviser pick, is also being considered, according to sources familiar with the discussions.

Hegseth’s nomination has been imperiled by recent revelations, including a 2017 settlement with a woman who accused him of sexual assault. He denies the allegation, calling it a “baseless claim” and explaining he made the payment to protect his family. “Absolutely not,” he told Megyn Kelly when asked if he assaulted the woman, adding that he has no drinking problem and would abstain from alcohol if confirmed.

Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., who had previously expressed concerns, offered tentative support after meeting with Hegseth. “I see no reason at this point not to be supportive,” Cramer said. He emphasized the importance of clear-headed leadership, to which Hegseth replied, “I’ll be available at three in the morning or any time in between.”

However, not all lawmakers are convinced. Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, a military veteran and sexual assault survivor, withheld her endorsement, stating they had a “frank and thorough conversation.” Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., called the allegations “disturbing” and stressed the need to ensure young women in the military feel respected.

Hegseth’s mother, Penelope Hegseth, appeared on Fox & Friends to defend her son, urging lawmakers to give him a chance. She addressed a 2018 email in which she confronted Hegseth about past mistakes, including infidelity, saying, “I think it can be overcome.”

As the nomination hangs in the balance, Hegseth remains defiant. “The future’s in God’s hands,” he told Kelly. Meanwhile, Trump has yet to comment publicly on Hegseth’s fate, leaving the defense secretary position uncertain as Inauguration Day approaches.
