NY Attorney General Letitia James announces bid for governor

New York Attorney General Letitia James announced her bid for the 2022 gubernatorial race Friday.

Just a day before the announcement, former governor Andrew Cuomo was hit with a criminal complaint related to allegations detailed in James’ sexual harassment report that led to his resignation.

James, 63, will face a formidable field, including Gov. Kathy Hochul, who has said she will run for a full term in 2022 after replacing Cuomo earlier this year.

James’ run comes after she issued a damning report in August that then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo sexually harassed 11 women, including former aides.

The report led Cuomo to resign later in August after 11 years in office and as he likely was gearing up to run for a fourth term.

James was elected to her current office in 2018 following the previous AGs resignation amid sexual harassment allegations. She would become the nation’s first Black female governor following Hochul’s history-making inauguration as New York’s first woman to hold the top post in state government.

“New Yorkers need a governor who isn’t afraid to stand up to powerful interests on behalf of the vulnerable,” James said in a statement Friday. “Throughout my career, I’ve taken on big forces and New Yorkers know I will never back down when it comes to fighting for them. Today, I am proud to announce my candidacy for governor of New York so we can bring transformational change that uplifts all New Yorkers.”

Before her time as Attorney General, James was a public advocate for New York City and represented Brooklyn’s 35th Council District in New York City Council for 10 years, working on legislation regarding safe living conditions and improving recycling in the city.
