Key Takeaways From The Gaetz Ethics Committee Report.

The House Ethics Committee released a damning report on Monday detailing allegations against former Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, citing substantial evidence of sexual misconduct, drug use, misuse of office, and obstruction. Gaetz, who denies all allegations, attempted to block the report’s release through a federal lawsuit earlier the same day.

The committee’s findings come after Gaetz’s resignation from Congress in November and his brief consideration as President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general—a nomination he withdrew following opposition from Senate Republicans.

Key Findings from the Report

1. Allegations of Sexual Misconduct with a Minor

The committee found “substantial evidence” that Gaetz engaged in sexual activity with a 17-year-old girl at a 2017 party, violating Florida’s statutory rape laws. Witness testimony and financial records corroborated that Gaetz paid the girl $400, which she understood to be for sex. The committee noted Gaetz may not have known her age until later but maintained contact with her after she turned 18.

Gaetz has vehemently denied these claims, writing on X (formerly Twitter):

“I NEVER had sexual contact with someone under 18. Any claim that I have would be destroyed in court—which is why no such claim was ever made in court.”

2. Paying Women for Sex

The report alleges that Gaetz paid more than $90,000 to 12 women for sexual encounters between 2017 and 2020, often through Venmo, PayPal, and CashApp. One woman testified Gaetz labeled a $750 payment as “tuition reimbursement.”

Gaetz has denied paying for sex, framing his payments as assistance to women he dated or knew.

3. Illegal Drug Use

The report cites evidence of Gaetz using cocaine, ecstasy, and marijuana between 2017 and 2019. Testimony revealed that Gaetz was known for providing drugs to women to facilitate sexual encounters and even created a pseudonymous email from his Capitol Hill office to purchase marijuana.

On X, Gaetz admitted to youthful indiscretions:

“It’s embarrassing, though not criminal, that I probably partied, womanized, drank and smoked more than I should have earlier in life. I live a different life now.”

4. Accepting Luxury Gifts in Violation of House Rules

The committee found Gaetz accepted luxury travel gifts, including a private jet flight and lavish expenses during a 2018 trip to the Bahamas. These exceeded permissible limits under House rules, and no waiver was sought.

5. Misuse of Official Resources for Personal Favors

Gaetz allegedly used his office to expedite a passport for a sexual partner by falsely claiming she was a constituent. The committee described this as a misuse of official resources.

6. Obstructing the Investigation

The committee accused Gaetz of attempting to obstruct their inquiry by providing minimal documentation, refusing interviews, and deflecting the investigation. Gaetz repeatedly claimed evidence existed that would exonerate him but failed to produce it.

Gaetz’s Response

Gaetz denies all wrongdoing, dismissing the allegations as politically motivated smears. In his resignation letter, he asserted his commitment to supporting President Trump in other capacities and downplayed the significance of the allegations against him.

What’s Next?

While Gaetz has not faced criminal charges, the Ethics Committee’s findings could further damage his reputation and political ambitions. The Department of Justice previously investigated him but declined to pursue federal sex trafficking charges.
