Jason Lee is Bridging Hollywood and Civic Duty in Bid for Stockton City Council

Nya Étienne

Last month, Jason Lee, the founder and CEO of HollywoodUnlocked, The Hollywood Cares Foundation, and host of “The Jason Lee Show,” revealed his candidacy for City Council in his hometown of Stockton, California. The District 6 City Council hopeful delved into his motivation for entering politics and unveiled his vision for addressing crucial local issues, offering a glimpse into his transformative journey from Hollywood to public service.

“Politics is something that exists, whether we participate or not. So that way we can start changing the landscape of how decisions are being made.”

Representing Stockton on a National Stage

Jason Lee’s journey begins in Stockton, where he faced formidable challenges, navigating the foster care system and overcoming adversity in a community rife with violence and drugs. Throughout his career, he maintained a profound connection to his roots, proudly showcasing Stockton on platforms like Wild ‘N Out and honoring the memory of his brother, who fell victim to violence there. Lee considers surviving the streets of Stockton among his most significant accomplishments.

“I’ve always represented my hometown,” Lee said during a wide-ranging conversation with Polialert.com’s Nya Étienne. “Stockton is literally what bred the person that you know, when I talk about my journey as a young man through the foster care system and navigating violence and drugs in my family.”

Fueled by resources, time, flexibility, and a drive to give back, Lee expressed his commitment to civic engagement, aligning with the values he promotes through his nonprofit work. His decision to run for City Council emanates from a profound desire to contribute actively to positive change in his community.

From Entertainment to Politics: A Surprising Transition

In addressing his unexpected transition into politics, Lee acknowledged that he never envisioned such a move five years ago. However, he emphasized the importance of political involvement, particularly when frustration looms with both major political parties. His growing relationship with the White House and discussions about the Biden-Harris administration were pivotal in motivating him to step up and contribute to the community.

“If you would have asked me five years ago, ‘is Jason Lee going to run for government?’ No. But I also realized a couple of things… If you’re frustrated with the Democrats and you’re frustrated with the Republicans, the option is not not being involved. You can’t just remove yourself from the political process and act like things are just going to go your way.”

Lee addressed the common disconnect between politicians and their communities, emphasizing his grassroots approach and dedication to actively engaging with the youth. Despite acknowledging the privilege of his current position in the entertainment industry, he stressed the need to bridge the gap between politicians and the people they serve.

Real Challenges, Real Solutions: Lee’s Vision for Stockton

Articulating his plans for Stockton, Lee identified key issues and proposed specific policies and initiatives. These included a ban on additional smoke shops and liquor stores, revitalizing the South Side of Stockton by attracting external businesses, addressing homelessness through a task force and systemic solutions, and implementing aggressive measures to combat crime and the school-to-prison pipeline.

“I’ve been talking to the police and the district attorney, as well as community organizations… on how to avoid further building this playground to prison pipeline, finding alternatives to people going on probation. If somebody gets caught with a gun, but they haven’t hurt anybody, what is the diversionary program they can go into to get the support and resources to go on a different path than going on probation and becoming that hook in the industry that we know is going to put them in prison eventually?”

Lee also emphasized the significance of addressing food deserts, providing access to facilities such as gyms and clinics, and tackling the lack of resources for youth sports. His multifaceted approach showcased a commitment to understanding the community’s needs and implementing creative and collaborative solutions.

“I want to lead and develop the task force focused on helping the unhoused, but also fixing the problem…It’s going to require a very aggressive approach to it that may be very controversial, but everybody that knows me knows I’m not afraid of controversy.”

Skills from Entertainment to Politics: A Seamless Transition

When questioned about the skills he brings from the entertainment industry to politics, Lee highlighted his ability to build relationships and his vision for leveraging Stockton’s underutilized entertainment infrastructure. He expressed a desire to attract tourists to the city, in turn boosting local businesses and creating jobs.

Lee emphasized his determination, assertiveness, and proactive approach in both realms. He sees his political role as an extension of his commitment to advocacy and community service. While acknowledging the challenges, Lee emphasized his readiness to lead and connect with his community on a personal level.

“I’m a very aggressive business person. I’m very assertive, I don’t like to wait, I don’t like “no.” … And I think that’s the energy that people are excited about because I’m not just talking about things … I want people to see that I walk the talk. If I say I’m going to do something, I do it, period.”

Addressing Doubts About Credibility and Intentions

In response to questions about his credibility and intentions, Lee drew on his extensive background in activism, including leading campaigns with Trayvon Martin’s family, working with labor unions, and advocating for quality healthcare. He urged people to look beyond superficial narratives and recognize his longstanding commitment to underserved communities.

“My credibility in the space of actually advocating for the underserved, the low-income family, the support of LGBTQ, and also people who may have been migrants to this country has been there. People choose to see people through clips and Instagram posts and optics or narratives created by people outside of their realm.”

As a seasoned advocate, Lee stressed the need for diverse voices in politics and encouraged others, especially those from marginalized communities, to actively participate in effecting change. He expressed a desire to break down stereotypes and serve as an inspiration for individuals aspiring to make a difference.

The Journey to City Council

Addressing concerns about balancing his roles as a media mogul and a city council member, Lee confidently asserted that his team at Hollywood Unlocked is well-equipped to manage operations. He sees his political role as an extension of his advocacy work and a platform to demonstrate that individuals can simultaneously thrive in various capacities.

Lee’s closing message emphasized the need for change and more diverse representation in politics. He urged people to challenge the status quo and recognize that true change requires active participation and a willingness to address systemic issues.

“I do know that when I’m in the room, people will see me as Jason from Hollywood Unlocked or Jason from TV or whatever. But I also know that the things and desires that my community have is greater…I’m a young Black [entrepreneur] who’s showing people the possibilities. And now, this next level of my endeavors will prove that anything is possible.”
