Haley Refuses To Say Slavery Was Cause Of Civil War

2024 GOP candidate Nikki Haley, former UN Ambassador and South Carolina governor, stirred controversy during a town hall event in Berlin, New Hampshire on Wednesday. When asked about the cause of the Civil War, Haley avoided mentioning slavery, a primary factor in the war. Instead, she attributed the conflict to disagreements over government roles and individual freedoms.

Speaking at the event, Haley stated, “I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how the government was going to run. The freedoms and what people could and couldn’t do. What do you think the cause of the Civil War was or argument?” A voter questioned her response, emphasizing that she hadn’t mentioned slavery. In reply, Haley focused on her belief that government should secure people’s rights and freedoms without excessive interference in their lives.

She emphasized, “Government doesn’t need to tell you how to live your life. They don’t need to tell you what you can and can’t do. They don’t need to be a part of your life. They need to make sure that you have freedom. We need to have capitalism. We need to have economic freedom. We need to make sure that we do all things so that individuals have the liberties so that they can have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to do or be anything they want to be without government getting in the way.”

When the voter expressed astonishment at her response without mentioning slavery, Haley asked, “What do you want me to say about slavery?” and swiftly moved to the next question.

This exchange occurred during a town hall event in New Hampshire, a state where direct interactions with voters are customary, posing both opportunities and challenges for political figures. Haley, whose popularity has surged in the state, faces the delicate task of aligning her southern roots with New Hampshire’s more moderate and independent-minded Republicanism.

Haley’s comments may pose challenges as she navigates the New Hampshire political landscape. She served as South Carolina’s governor when the state removed the Confederate flag from government grounds in 2015, a move prompted by the tragic shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. However, in a 2010 interview, she defended states’ rights to secede from the United States, adding complexity to her stance on historical issues.

While the causes of the Civil War are multifaceted, with states’ rights and economic factors at play, slavery remains a central and widely acknowledged factor. The war, the deadliest in U.S. history, was fought predominantly over the South’s desire to preserve the institution of slavery.
