The FBI is intensifying efforts to identify the individual who placed pipe bombs near the Republican National Committee (RNC) and Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 5, 2021. Nearly four years later, the suspect remains unidentified despite extensive investigative efforts.
In a renewed plea for public assistance, the FBI on Thursday released new video footage showing the suspect near the DNC. The individual is described as approximately 5 feet, 7 inches tall and was wearing a hood, gloves, and a mask, which were commonplace due to the pandemic and January weather at the time.
A reward of up to $500,000 is being offered for information leading to the suspect’s arrest and conviction.
Details of the Crime
The bombs were planted in a Capitol Hill neighborhood between 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., just hours before the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. The devices were discovered 15 hours later and were confirmed to be viable, posing a serious threat to public safety.
Investigation Efforts
David Sundberg, assistant director of the FBI Washington field office, outlined the agency’s exhaustive investigation. The effort includes:
- Visits to over 1,200 residences and businesses.
- More than 1,000 interviews conducted.
- Analysis of approximately 39,000 video files.
- Review of over 600 tips.
One notable clue is the suspect’s footwear—Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes with a gold logo.
Challenges and Renewed Appeal
Sundberg noted that the suspect’s attire made identification challenging, as masks and gloves were common during the pandemic. Witnesses likely did not find the suspect’s appearance unusual.
“We believe someone has information,” Sundberg said. “Even if they didn’t think it was relevant at the time, it may now seem significant in light of new details.”
The FBI is urging anyone with information, particularly related to the suspect’s identity, location in early January 2021, or access to bomb-making materials, to come forward.
Congressional Pressure
The renewed appeal follows a report from House Republicans criticizing the FBI for the lack of progress in the case. The report also noted the FBI’s reluctance to share investigative details with congressional subcommittees.
Despite these challenges, the FBI remains committed to solving the case and ensuring justice is served.
