Chief Justice John Roberts has stepped in to set the record straight after Donald Trump and his allies demanded the impeachment of judges who have ruled against his administration.
In a rare public statement, Roberts dismissed the idea, making it clear that impeachment is not meant to be used just because someone disagrees with a court’s decision.
“For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision,” Roberts said. “The normal appellate review process exists for that purpose.”
Trump and his supporters have been pushing for judges to be removed from the bench after several rulings blocked key administration policies in the early months of his second term. The latest controversy erupted after U.S. District Judge James Boasberg attempted to stop the administration from deporting Venezuelan migrants, a decision that Trump did not take lightly.
“This judge, like many of the Crooked Judges I am forced to appear before, should be IMPEACHED!!!” Trump wrote on social media, escalating the situation.
Roberts’ response is a rare instance of a Supreme Court justice publicly addressing a sitting president’s remarks.
Trump’s criticism of the judiciary is nothing new, but Roberts’ decision to speak out suggests growing concern over attacks on the legal system.
