President Joe Biden’s role at the Democratic National Convention next week has shifted dramatically following his decision to end his bid for a second term, but his message will remain consistent: the stakes of this election are critical. Biden is set to deliver the keynote address on Monday, during which he will make a strong case for Vice President Kamala Harris to succeed him.
Biden’s speech will focus on the accomplishments of the Biden-Harris administration over the past four years, from economic recovery to foreign policy achievements. However, he will also underscore the ongoing threat he believes former President Donald Trump poses to American democracy. According to Biden officials, the president will remind the convention and the nation of the importance of defeating Trump once again in November.
“After saving democracy in 2020, President Biden is determined to defeat the threat to democracy posed by Donald Trump,” one official noted.
The first day of the convention in Chicago will include tributes to Biden, marking the end of his half-century career in public service. Initially, the convention was intended to support Biden’s re-election bid, but now it will serve as an opportunity for him to shape his legacy and pass the torch to Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
Biden is spending the weekend at Camp David, refining his speech with senior advisers. The address is expected to highlight the swift endorsement of Harris after his withdrawal from the race, which helped unite the Democratic Party in a time of crisis.
The speech will also contrast the Biden-Harris administration’s record with the current state of the Republican Party under Trump. A Biden official highlighted the administration’s accomplishments: “Four years ago, America was reeling from a once-in-a-century pandemic, isolated on the world stage, crime was up, the middle class sidelined. Today: We are the global engine of growth, our Alliances are strong, violent crime rate is at a 50-year low, border crossings are lower than when the previous administration left office, and we are making progress on the issues Americans care about most.”
Following his address, Biden will depart Chicago for Southern California, where he will work with top advisers on plans for the remaining months of his term. He is expected to maintain a robust schedule, traveling across the country to promote his vision for the future and to support Harris’s campaign.
Biden’s remarks on Monday will set the tone for a convention that, while celebrating his tenure, will look ahead to the challenges of the upcoming election and the continued fight for the soul of the nation.
