President Joe Biden has voiced concerns about the likelihood of a peaceful transfer of power if former President Donald Trump loses the upcoming 2024 election. In a recent interview with CBS News, Biden was asked about his confidence in a peaceful transition in January 2025 if Trump were to lose.
“If Trump loses, I’m not confident at all,” Biden responded, reflecting his unease about the stability of the transfer process.
Biden’s comments come amid heightened tensions and concerns over Trump’s past remarks about potential violence. Trump previously warned of a “bloodbath” for the country if he loses the election, a statement made in the context of economic policies.
“He means it, all the stuff about if we lose, there’ll be a bloodbath,” Biden said, urging people to take Trump’s words seriously. “You can’t love your country only when you win.”
A spokesperson for Trump’s campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
In March, Trump mentioned the potential for a “bloodbath” if he lost the election, and during a June 27 presidential debate, he hesitated to commit to accepting the 2024 election results. Eventually, Trump stated he would accept the results if it was a “fair and legal and good election.”
Biden also expressed concerns about efforts that could complicate the post-election certification process. He referred to actions in local election districts aimed at influencing vote counting.
“Look what they’re trying to do now, in the local election districts where people count the votes,” he noted.
Recently, the Republican-controlled State Election Board in Georgia voted to give local officials more power over certifying election results. Trump praised this rule change, which adds to the concerns about post-election integrity.
Biden’s narrow victory in Georgia in the 2020 election, by just 11,779 votes, was significant as it marked the first Democratic win in the state since Bill Clinton in 1992.
Trump’s ongoing statements about the 2020 election and the events of January 6, 2021, when a mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol, continue to raise alarms. Trump has described January 6 as “a beautiful day” and referred to the convicted participants as “unbelievable patriots” and “hostages.” He has also pledged to pardon those convicted for their roles in the attack if he wins the upcoming election.
The full interview with President Biden is scheduled to air on CBS Sunday morning.
