President Joe Biden addressed the nation on Wednesday following a devastating terror attack in New Orleans that claimed 15 lives and injured dozens more during New Year’s celebrations. Speaking from Camp David, Biden called the attack “despicable” and offered condolences to the victims and their families.
“I want you to know I grieve with you. Our nation grieves with you,” Biden said. “We’re going to stand with you as you mourn and as you heal in the weeks to come.”
Biden revealed that the FBI informed him the suspect, 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, posted videos to social media shortly before the attack, expressing allegiance to ISIS and intent to kill. Jabbar, a U.S. citizen and Army veteran, drove a truck adorned with an ISIS flag into a crowded street before engaging in a deadly shootout with police.
“The investigation is still active, and no one should jump to conclusions,” Biden emphasized, vowing to keep the public informed.
Biden praised New Orleans for its resilience. “So many people around the world love New Orleans because of its history, its culture, and above all, its people,” he said. “The spirit of our New Orleans will never, never, never be defeated. It will always shine forth.”
The president also thanked first responders and law enforcement, commending their swift action to prevent further casualties.
Biden briefly addressed another incident involving a Tesla Cybertruck explosion outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, which is under investigation as a possible terrorist attack. “Authorities are examining any connection between the two incidents, but there’s nothing to report at this time,” Biden stated.
In the wake of the attack, the Sugar Bowl college football game in New Orleans has been rescheduled to allow for increased security measures at the Caesars Superdome.
Earlier on Wednesday, Biden convened a call with top homeland security officials, including Attorney General Merrick Garland, FBI Director Christopher Wray, and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
“I’ve directed my team to ensure every resource is available to get to the bottom of what happened and to eliminate any remaining threat,” Biden said.
