Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons to Resign Next Month

Todd Lyons, the acting head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said Thursday he will resign at the end of May, marking a significant leadership change at the agency tasked with carrying out President Donald Trump’s mass deportation agenda.

In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, Lyons said his decision was driven by a desire to spend more time with his family.

“My sons are both reaching a pivotal point in their lives, and my wife and I wish to spend as much time as possible with them,” Lyons wrote, calling his tenure leading the agency a “tremendous honor.”

His departure adds to ongoing turnover within the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE and has faced pressure to balance enforcement priorities with public concerns over the agency’s conduct.

Lyons’ exit comes at a time of heightened scrutiny of ICE’s operations. Public opinion of the agency has declined amid criticism of aggressive enforcement tactics tied to the administration’s immigration policies. The issue intensified following the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens in Minnesota earlier this year, which sparked national outrage and renewed calls for reform.

Lyons, who joined ICE in 2007 as an agent in Dallas, rose through the ranks to lead its enforcement and removal division before being tapped as acting director. During his tenure, he defended the agency’s role in implementing Trump’s immigration agenda, while also warning of increasing threats against ICE personnel, including incidents affecting his own family.

The leadership transition also follows the recent appointment of Mullin, a former U.S. senator from Oklahoma, as homeland security secretary after the dismissal of Kristi Noem amid a series of controversies.

Mullin has been tasked with reshaping the department’s public image while continuing to execute the administration’s hardline immigration policies, a balancing act that has drawn scrutiny from both supporters and critics.

Stephen Miller, a key architect of the administration’s immigration strategy, praised Lyons in a statement, calling him a “phenomenal patriot and dedicated leader” who played a central role in efforts to secure the border.

Advocates and immigration experts say Lyons’ departure raises questions about the future direction of ICE, particularly as the administration continues to pursue an expansive deportation campaign.

The White House has not yet announced a successor, and it remains unclear whether the next leader will maintain the current approach or seek to recalibrate the agency’s strategy in response to public and political pressure.
