Google Maps Adopts Trump’s ‘Lake America’ Name for U.S. Users

Google Maps has begun displaying “Lake America” for users in the United States after President Donald Trump ordered the federal government to rename Lake Ontario, adding a digital twist to an increasingly contentious dispute with Canada.

Google announced Saturday that the change was rolling out following Trump’s executive order last week. Under the update, U.S. users will see “Lake America,” Canadians will continue to see “Lake Ontario,” and users elsewhere will see both names, with “Lake America” in parentheses.

“These updates follow our long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country,” Google said.

The lake, which borders New York and Ontario, has been known as Lake Ontario for centuries. Trump’s order changes the name used by the U.S. government but does not require Canada or other countries to adopt it.

Trump’s order reaches Google Maps

Trump directed Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to update the Geographic Names Information System, or GNIS, which works with the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to standardize geographic names for federal use.

Google said its maps reflect name changes appearing in official government sources.

White House Communications Director Steven Cheung celebrated the update Sunday on X.

“It’s official! LAKE AMERICA on Google Maps,” he wrote.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has rejected the new name, saying last week, “New York won’t be calling it that.”

Canadian officials have likewise made clear they will continue using Lake Ontario.

Another geographic fight with Canada

The rename comes as the United States and Canada remain locked in a bitter trade dispute.

The Trump administration recently imposed 50% tariffs on hundreds of Canadian goods after negotiations failed to resolve the standoff. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded with plans for matching tariffs of up to 50% on billions of dollars in U.S. goods.

Trump has repeatedly accused Canada of taking advantage of the United States economically.

In a Truth Social post Sunday, he said Canadian leaders had been “ripping us off for decades” and argued that should end.

“They want to be treated like a State, but they aren’t one,” Trump wrote.

Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario follows a similar move involving the Gulf of Mexico. Earlier in his presidency, he ordered the body of water to be referred to as the “Gulf of America” for U.S. federal purposes.

Google adopted that designation for U.S. users while retaining “Gulf of Mexico” elsewhere.

A name change, not a geographic one

The dispute highlights the limits of unilateral geographic renaming.

The United States can establish names for its own federal use, but it cannot compel Canada, international organizations or other governments to recognize those designations.

That is why the same lake can now carry different labels depending on where a Google Maps user is located.

For Americans, Trump’s preferred name is becoming increasingly visible. For Canadians, it remains Lake Ontario.

The geography has not changed. The politics have.
