Fair Fight Action, the voting rights organization founded by Stacey Abrams, today launched Freedom to Vote Fall, a continuation of the group’s Hot Call Summer campaign to demand federal action to protect the freedom to vote.
With Freedom to Vote Fall, Fair Fight Action is doubling down on its nationwide effort to secure federal voting rights legislation. The announcement of Freedom to Vote Fall comes just one day after Senators Manchin, Klobuchar, Warnock, Ossoff, and members of the working group announced the Freedom to Vote Act—a revised version of the For the People Act, which received unanimous Democratic support in the House and Senate.
This year, Fair Fight Action partnered with Stand Up America to launch a campaign generating constituent calls in support of federal voting rights legislation using a joint hotline: 833-465-7142. Together, the two organizations drove more than 150,000 constituent calls demanding that Congress act to protect our democracy. The Freedom to Vote Fall campaign will continue to drive calls to Senators while also educating voters on the key provisions of the newly introduced Freedom to Vote Act. It is urgent that Congress protect the freedom to vote and stop partisan gerrymandering by passing both the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act before redistricting maps are formally approved.
“With the redistricting process already underway in a number of states, the time has never been more urgent for the U.S. Senate to take action to protect the freedom to vote,” said Fair Fight Action Founder and Chair Stacey Abrams. “We need the freedom to vote in fair elections so we can elect leaders who will deliver for us. Together, the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act will protect our democracy by ensuring all eligible Americans regardless of zip code can register to vote, cast a ballot, and have that ballot counted. With Freedom to Vote Fall, we are demonstrating through continued calls to Senators that the provisions of these two bills are overwhelmingly supported by the American people across party lines. Senators must respond to the demands of their constituents by supporting these bills.”
The Freedom to Vote Act addresses four key priorities critical to safeguarding the freedom to vote, including:
- Protecting against intimidation and subversion in elections;
- Reducing long lines post-Shelby County;
- Protecting and expanding access to vote by mail; and
- Ensuring fair districts are drawn
Critically, the Freedom to Vote Act mitigates the harmful impact of state-level anti-voter legislation that has already been passed in, among other states, Georgia, Texas, and Arizona, and continues to be pushed in nearly every state legislature. In 2021 alone, 581 anti-voter bills have been introduced in 49 states, with 127 bills still moving through state legislatures.
The Freedom to Vote Act takes the necessary and long-overdue step to restore the freedom to vote in federal elections to formerly incarcerated people. The bill also provides national standards for voter validation, allowing voters to use alternative forms of ID such as a student ID or gun license, consistent with practices in both Republican- and Democratic-controlled states.
Fair Fight Action and Stand Up America will continue to drive calls through the 833-465-7142 hotline until the Senate passes both the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
