The Department of Defense announced a UFO task force to investigate unidentified flying objects in restricted air space and determine whether or not they pose a threat.
Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks announced the Airborne Object Identification and Management Synchronization Group (AOIMSG) last week.
“The AOIMSG will synchronize efforts across the Department and the broader U.S. government to detect, identify and attribute objects of interests in Special Use Airspace (SUA), and to assess and mitigate any associated threats to safety of flight and national security,” the Defense Department said in a press release.
The new task force will succeed the Navy’s Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force, which was created in August of 2020. Congress approved a budget for a report about unidentified vehicles restricted in December as part of the coronavirus relief bill.
The group’s formation follows the June 2021 report involving UAP. Only one of 144 UAP cases was identified since 2004. Some involved unexplained objects that traveled at unusual speeds and flight patterns, suggesting advanced technology.
Nearly all incidents investigated remain unexplained, but the department did not find any evidence they came from space. And while their origin remains unknown, they are authentic.
“Incursions by any airborne object into our SUA pose safety of flight and operations security concerns, and may pose national security challenges,” the department said in a statement. “DOD takes reports of incursions — by any airborne object, identified or unidentified — very seriously, and investigates each one.”
The task force will roll out more details in the coming weeks.
