A new book by veteran journalist Bob Woodward has revealed that former President Donald Trump held as many as seven private phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin after leaving office and secretly sent him COVID-19 test machines at the height of the pandemic. The revelations are detailed in Woodward’s upcoming book, War, set to release next week, with The Associated Press obtaining an early copy.
According to Woodward, Trump had a private call with Putin at Mar-a-Lago in early 2024, one of several calls between the two since Trump left the White House. “There have been multiple calls between Trump and Putin, perhaps as many as seven,” Woodward wrote, though details of the conversations remain undisclosed.
Trump’s communications director, Steven Cheung, fiercely denied the claims, calling them “made-up stories” and accusing Woodward of suffering from “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
The book also claims that during the COVID-19 pandemic, Trump secretly sent COVID test machines to Putin for personal use. The former Russian leader reportedly advised Trump not to reveal the gesture, fearing backlash, but Trump agreed to keep the matter private.
Vice President Kamala Harris criticized Trump for his actions during an interview with Howard Stern, stating, “This person who wants to be president again, who secretly is helping out an adversary while the American people are dying by the hundreds every day.”
Woodward’s book further delves into other key political figures, including President Joe Biden’s strained relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Biden’s harsh criticism of Barack Obama’s handling of Russia’s 2014 invasion of Crimea. According to Woodward, Biden privately lashed out at Netanyahu during the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, calling him a “son of a bitch” and accusing him of lying.
The book has already stirred controversy, with Trump’s team denying many of the claims. However, it offers a deeper insight into the complex dynamics shaping U.S. politics and foreign relations in recent years.
