Trump Casts Mail Ballot Despite Calling It “Cheating”

President Donald Trump cast a mail ballot in a Florida special election, according to county records, even as he continues to publicly denounce the voting method as prone to fraud.

Records from Palm Beach County Elections Office show Trump’s ballot was received and counted ahead of Tuesday’s election. The records do not specify how the ballot was delivered.

“Mail-in voting means mail-in cheating,” Trump said Monday, repeating a claim he has made for years despite a lack of evidence of widespread voter fraud.

Familiar Pattern

The move mirrors Trump’s actions during the 2020 election, when he also voted by mail while criticizing the practice.

At the time, Trump defended his use of mail voting by citing logistical constraints, arguing there is a distinction between absentee voting under specific circumstances and broader access to mail-in ballots.

Policy Push and Political Messaging

Trump’s latest comments come as he promotes the SAVE America Act, a Republican-backed bill that would impose voter ID and proof-of-citizenship requirements in federal elections.

While Trump has suggested the legislation would effectively end mail-in voting, the bill would instead restrict and regulate the practice — allowing it in limited cases such as illness, disability, military service or travel.

A White House spokesperson said Trump’s vote was consistent with those exceptions, noting his primary residence is in Washington while he remains registered in Florida.

Claims and Contradictions

Trump has repeatedly asserted that mail-in voting leads to widespread fraud, claims that have been rejected by courts, election officials and multiple investigations.

In remarks earlier this year, he called for “no more crooked mail-in ballots” and claimed the United States is unique in allowing the practice — a statement contradicted by international data showing many countries permit some form of mail voting.

Election officials note that mail ballots are typically verified through safeguards such as signature matching and voter registration checks.

Local Election Context

The ballot Trump cast was for a special election in Florida, including a state House race in a district that encompasses his Mar-a-Lago residence.

Trump has endorsed Republican candidate Jon Maples in the contest against Democrat Emily Gregory and has urged supporters to turn out to vote.

Broader Political Landscape

Mail-in voting has remained a central issue in national politics since the COVID-19 pandemic expanded its use in 2020.

Since returning to office, Trump has continued to tie election policy to broader legislative priorities, including linking voting reforms to negotiations over federal funding and homeland security measures.

What Comes Next

The SAVE America Act remains stalled in the Senate, where it lacks the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster.

Meanwhile, debates over mail-in voting — including a pending case before the U.S. Supreme Court on ballot deadlines — could further shape how elections are conducted ahead of upcoming contests.
