Trump Campaign Says It Has Been Hacked By Iranian Group

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign announced on Saturday that it had fallen victim to a cyberattack in June, allegedly carried out by an Iranian group. The breach, which reportedly coincided with Trump’s selection of a vice-presidential nominee, has raised concerns about foreign interference in the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for the Trump campaign, confirmed the breach, stating, “These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our Democratic process.”

The hack was first reported by Politico. According to Politico, the first signs of the breach came in July when they began receiving emails from an anonymous account that contained internal documents from the Trump campaign. Among the leaked materials were research papers on at least two contenders for Trump’s running mate, including Ohio Senator JD Vance, who was eventually chosen as the GOP vice-presidential nominee.

“This incident coincides with the close timing of President Trump’s selection of a Vice Presidential nominee,” Cheung told NBC News. He further emphasized the gravity of the situation, suggesting that the cyberattack was part of a broader effort by Iran to disrupt the U.S. electoral process. “The Iranians know that President Trump will stop their reign of terror just like he did in his first four years in the White House. Any media or news outlet reprinting documents or internal communications are doing the bidding of America’s enemies and doing exactly what they want.”

Supporting these claims, a recent report by Microsoft pointed to an “Iranian group connected with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC” as the likely perpetrators. The report revealed that the group sent a spear-phishing email in June targeting a high-ranking official on a presidential campaign. While Microsoft did not specifically name the campaign involved, the timing and details suggest that Trump’s campaign may have been the target.

The FBI has acknowledged being “aware of the media reporting” but declined to provide further comments on the situation.

The incident has sparked significant concern about the security of the upcoming 2024 election, as well as the potential for further foreign interference. As the Trump campaign continues to assess the damage from the hack, the broader implications of this cyberattack remain a matter of national security and political urgency.
