Trump Calls Democrats “Enemy from Within,” Takes Aim at Adam Schiff

In a new interview that aired Sunday, former President Donald Trump took aim at his political opponents, labeling Democrats and other critics as the “enemy from within.” He argued that these internal adversaries pose a greater threat to the United States than foreign rivals such as China and Russia.

During the Fox News interview with host Maria Bartiromo, Trump singled out California Representative Adam Schiff, the lead prosecutor during his first impeachment trial, and accused him of being a key antagonist.

“We have the outside enemy, and then we have the enemy from within, and the enemy from within, in my opinion, is more dangerous than China, Russia and all these countries,” Trump said. He added, “I call [Schiff] the enemy from within.”

The comments follow Trump’s growing rhetorical attacks on Democrats, including Vice President Kamala Harris, as he escalates his accusations against those who have investigated or opposed him. Throughout his campaign for the upcoming 2024 presidential election, Trump has repeatedly labeled his critics as criminals and suggested that their actions are illegal.

Trump’s relationship with Schiff has long been combative. Schiff was one of the central figures in the investigation into Trump’s ties with Russia and played a significant role in Trump’s first impeachment. On Sunday, Trump again accused Schiff of fabricating a narrative about his connections with Russia, referencing the investigation led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

“You look at the danger he put our country in, potentially with Russia, with the phony, made-up deal that he made up with Hillary and some bad people,” Trump said.

Schiff responded to Trump’s comments on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “Yet another nonsensical rant about me filled with tired insults, lies about voting booths, and more, this time in my home state of California. Seriously, Donald. Why are you so obsessed with me?”

Schiff, a Democratic nominee for Senate, has also been targeted by House Republicans. In 2023, he was censured by the House for allegedly misrepresenting the findings of the Mueller report, which looked into Trump’s 2016 campaign’s interactions with Russia.

As the 2024 election draws nearer, Trump continues to frame his domestic opponents as greater threats than any foreign powers, a stance that has raised eyebrows among Democrats and his critics. Trump has called on his supporters to be vigilant but insisted that there won’t be unrest on their side if he wins the election.

“The bigger problem is the enemy from within… we have some very bad people, some sick people,” Trump said. Any unrest, according to Trump, “should be very easily handled… by National Guard or the military.”

With the stakes of the upcoming election growing higher, Trump’s rhetoric suggests a campaign that will not only focus on foreign policy but also on tackling what he sees as internal threats posed by his political adversaries.
