In a bid to regain momentum in his 2024 presidential campaign, Donald Trump is expanding his leadership team by bringing back some of his most trusted allies, including former 2016 campaign manager Corey Lewandowski.
Lewandowski, who has remained close to Trump as an informal adviser, is now officially joining the campaign’s senior leadership team, a move aimed at strengthening Trump’s position as the election race intensifies.
The campaign is also adding Tim Murtaugh, who served as communications director during Trump’s 2020 campaign, alongside Alex Pfeiffer and Alex Bruesewitz, former top officials with the Trump-aligned MAGA Inc. super PAC. Bruesewitz is particularly noted for his strong social media presence, which the campaign hopes to leverage in the coming months. Taylor Budowich, who recently left his role leading MAGA Inc., has also joined the campaign in a senior capacity.
The decision to bring on these seasoned veterans comes at a critical time. Trump has recently fallen behind Vice President Kamala Harris in both fundraising and some swing state polls, causing concern among Republican circles about his standing in the race. However, Trump campaign insiders insist that the new hires are not indicative of a campaign shakeup but rather a reinforcement of the leadership team as the election approaches.
“These additions will help President Trump prosecute the case against Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, the most radical ticket in American history,” said Trump co-campaign managers Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita in a statement. Both Wiles and LaCivita have maintained strong support from Trump, who recently expressed his satisfaction with their leadership.
Lewandowski’s return is particularly notable given his controversial departure from a top position in a pro-Trump super PAC in 2021 following allegations of sexual misconduct. Despite this, Trump has continued to stand by Lewandowski, who remains a key figure within Trump’s inner circle.
Trump, during a press conference at his Bedminster resort, expressed his confidence in his campaign’s leadership, praising both Wiles and LaCivita and noting Lewandowski’s role as a “personal envoy” within the campaign.
As Trump looks to regain his footing in the race, these strategic hires signal his determination to mount a formidable challenge against the Harris-Walz ticket in the final stretch leading up to the election.
