In a surprising and closely watched encounter, President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met privately inside St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday, just before attending the funeral for Pope Francis.
The meeting, described as a “very productive session” by White House Communications Director Steven Cheung, comes at a pivotal moment in the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia.
“Good meeting. We discussed a lot one on one,” Zelenskyy wrote afterward on X. “Hoping for results on everything we covered. Protecting lives of our people. Full and unconditional ceasefire. Reliable and lasting peace that will prevent another war from breaking out.”
Historic Meeting Amid Historic Mourning
This was the first time Trump and Zelenskyy had met since their tense Oval Office exchange in February. Their Vatican meeting, seen by some officials as potentially historic, focused heavily on achieving a full ceasefire and laying the groundwork for a lasting peace.
Video posted by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino showed Trump also speaking with French President Emmanuel Macron before sitting down with Zelenskyy.
In a notable display of diplomacy amid somber circumstances, world leaders gathered to honor Pope Francis while simultaneously engaging in high-stakes geopolitical discussions.
Signals of Progress Toward Ukraine-Russia Peace
Late Friday night, Trump fueled further speculation about a breakthrough, posting on his social media platform that it was a “good day in talks and meetings with Russia and Ukraine.“
“They are very close to a deal, and the two sides should now meet, at very high levels, to finish it off,” Trump wrote.
He emphasized urgency in stopping the bloodshed, stating the U.S. will assist “wherever is necessary” to facilitate an end to the war. Trump, however, did not provide specific details about what the preliminary agreements might entail.
Earlier Friday, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, another indicator that negotiations are accelerating behind the scenes.
Seating Dynamics at the Funeral Underscore Tensions
At the funeral, the seating arrangements reflected current diplomatic realities. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were seated just a few rows ahead of former President Joe Biden and former First Lady Jill Biden, underlining the delicate balance of old and new U.S. leadership in global affairs.
Zelenskyy and Olena Zelenska, his wife, were seated approximately seven seats away from the Trumps, symbolizing proximity amid delicate diplomacy.
What’s Next for Ukraine and Russia?
While no formal peace announcement has yet been made, officials close to both Trump and Zelenskyy have suggested that the outlines of a ceasefire agreement are emerging.
Whether the talks can overcome the many hurdles — territorial disputes, security guarantees, and rebuilding efforts — remains to be seen, but Saturday’s private meeting marks the strongest signal yet that an end to Europe’s bloodiest conflict since World War II could be within reach.
