Senator Ron Johnson accuses the Trump administration of corruption during a Fox News interview

Wisconsin Republican Senator Ron Johnson accused the Trump administration of corruption during a Fox News interview on Saturday, pointing to explosive claims from a former White House adviser, including allegations involving outgoing chief of staff Susie Wiles.

The comments stood out because of who was making them. Johnson has been one of Trump’s most reliable allies in the Senate for years, and he rarely aims criticism at the administration itself.

Johnson was reacting to Calley Means, a former White House health adviser who quit last month. Means went on The Joe Rogan Experience in an episode released Friday and accused Trump’s top aides and political strategists of catering to special interests. According to The Washington Post, he named people close to Trump who he said blocked policies backed by the Make America Healthy Again movement, the health agenda associated with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. that focuses on food additives, chronic disease and the influence of drug and food companies.

Some of the most serious claims were about Wiles. The Daily Beast reported that Means alleged Wiles repeatedly pressed him about money for the midterms. Means also alleged that companies that hired Wiles’ daughter as a lobbyist went on to get preferential treatment from the administration. A lobbyist is someone paid to push lawmakers and officials toward decisions that help their clients. These are Means’ allegations, and they have not been proven.

On Fox News, Senator Ron Johnson said Means laid out the problem “in gory detail,” including corruption “within the Trump administration.”

He did not stop at the White House. “This is how government operates on a bipartisan basis,” Johnson said, describing “government agency after government agency, captured by the very… corporations that are regulated by government.” In plain terms, he is arguing that the companies agencies are supposed to police end up having too much control over those same agencies, no matter which party is in charge.

The White House did not immediately respond to The Washington Post’s request for comment.

The timing adds another layer. Johnson’s comments came the day after Trump announced Wiles is out as chief of staff, with Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller taking over on Monday, November 9. The shakeup followed a midterm election in which Republicans lost control of Congress.

Johnson tied those losses directly to the corruption issue. Republican voters “were expecting us to drain the swamp, but it seems like the swamp won,” he said. “Drain the swamp” was one of Trump’s signature campaign promises, a pledge to clean up Washington and cut the power of lobbyists and insiders.

Johnson said his party needs to “embrace the enduring principles of our founders, limited government” if it wants to win in 2028.

He is also trying to slow things down inside his own party. Johnson is gathering signatures to delay Senate Republican leadership elections, the internal vote where GOP senators choose who leads them in the chamber. He told Fox News the conference needs serious soul searching conversations after the midterms before anyone locks in new leadership.

Whether other Republicans join him is the next thing to watch. A longtime Trump loyalist openly saying the swamp won is not something the White House can easily wave off, especially with a new chief of staff stepping in and Democrats taking control of Congress.
