U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is taking a stand against potential threats to election security and voter rights. He, along with a group of Senators, has urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to keep the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Election Threats Task Force active. This task force is crucial in protecting Georgia’s election workers, who have faced increasing threats and intimidation.
In a letter to Attorney General Bondi, Sen. Ossoff and his colleagues expressed deep concerns about recent changes at the DOJ and the uncertain future of the task force. They emphasized the urgent need for transparency and continued federal support.
“Election workers continue to fear for their safety, so it is critical that the work of the Task Force continues to deter and counter these threats,” the Senators wrote.
A report by the Brennan Center for Justice found that 38% of local election officials have faced mistreatment, and 54% worry about the safety of their colleagues. These alarming numbers highlight the importance of maintaining federal protections for election workers.
Ossoff’s Continued Fight for Voter Protection
Sen. Ossoff has been a strong advocate for voting rights and election security. Last year, he introduced two key pieces of legislation:
1. Election Worker and Polling Place Protection Act – Expands protections for election workers and volunteers to ensure their safety.
2. Right to Vote Act – Establishes a legal right to vote in federal elections, allowing Americans to challenge unfair voting restrictions in court.
Additionally, in July, he launched an inquiry with the DOJ and FBI to ensure proper measures are in place to protect election workers as the country moves into the election season.
With ongoing threats to election workers and concerns over voter suppression, Sen. Ossoff remains committed to ensuring free, fair, and safe elections in Georgia and across the country.
