Rep. Cori Bush, D-Mo., has lost her primary to St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell, as projected by NBC News. Bell is now expected to carry Missouri’s deep-blue 1st Congressional District in November. The primary exposed deep divisions within the Democratic Party, especially regarding Israel, with Bush being a vocal critic of the Israeli government.
Bell highlighted his pragmatic approach, telling NBC News, “I’ll be a progressive member of Congress, but I’m also going to be a practical member of Congress. I recognize that we can’t get anything done without majorities, and so that means we need to work with our fellow Democrats up there, and we also, when we can, reach across the aisle and work with folks to get things done for this region and for this country.”
United Democracy Project, a super PAC connected to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, spent nearly $9 million supporting Bell and attacking Bush. Initially running for the Senate, Bell shifted his focus to challenge Bush following the Hamas attacks on Israel.
The primary saw significant funding and attention, making it one of Tuesday’s highest-profile races. Bell criticized Bush for her votes against key legislative items, such as the bipartisan infrastructure package and the child tax credit. Bush, in turn, highlighted Bell’s failure to bring charges against the police officer involved in the 2014 killing of Michael Brown, a case that was pivotal in both their careers.
Despite her loss, Bush hinted at her continued political involvement, stating, “One thing I don’t do is go away.”
