Premiums Doubled While Trump Calls Health Care The Best

Republicans have let health care costs soar on their watch, and one week from today, voters have a choice: continue letting Republicans eliminate coverage and let costs skyrocket, or choose Democrats who say they will protect coverage and bring those costs down.

On Sunday, Trump told Fox News that Americans have “the best healthcare plans in the world,” then admitted, “Now that doesn’t cover everybody, but it covers a lot of people.” Millions of Americans know exactly who gets left out. After the Trump administration let enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies expire at the end of last year, premiums for marketplace enrollees doubled on average, and about five million people have dropped their coverage. Republicans have offered nothing to replace it.

Democrats are running on a different vision. In Michigan, Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, a doctor and Detroit’s former top public health official, has made Medicare for All the center of his campaign. He says universal coverage would decouple health insurance from your job and eliminate steep out-of-pocket costs. In Texas, Senate candidate James Talarico wants to let Americans of any age buy into Medicare, protect people with pre-existing conditions, and keep medical debt from damaging credit scores. In Maine, Troy Jackson also backs Medicare for All in a race both parties see as key to Senate control.

The contrast could not be clearer. Republicans let premiums double and insist the system is already the best in the world. Democrats are running on plans to cover more people and lower what they pay. Voters buckling under medical bills are responding, packing rallies where crowds chant “Medicare for All!”

Trump says America has the best health care in the world, even though it “doesn’t cover everybody.” Millions of people dropped coverage this year after his administration let ACA subsidies expire, exposing them to medical debt or forcing them to avoid care when they really need it.

Republicans let premiums double and offered nothing in return. On November 3, voters can choose candidates who will actually fight to make health care affordable.
