Oklahoma’s New Social Studies Standards Push 2020 Election Fraud Claims, Sparking Controversy

Oklahoma’s revised social studies standards are facing backlash after last-minute changes inserted references to widely debunked claims of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election. The State Board of Education approved the new standards in February, but the changes were not publicly discussed or included in meeting documents.

A new high school standard instructs students to analyze “discrepancies” in the 2020 election by reviewing claims of ballot-counting pauses, mail-in voting security risks, and sudden voter surges—arguments central to Trump’s election fraud narrative, despite being disproven by courts and election officials.

Some lawmakers, including Rep. Ronny Johns (R-Ada), also raised concerns over new COVID-19 pandemic explanations and increased references to the Bible in history lessons, warning that teachers could be put in politically charged situations.

While some Republican House members are considering blocking or revising the standards, Senate Republicans have remained silent. Senate Education Committee Chair Adam Pugh (R-Edmond) and Vice Chair Ally Seifried (R-Claremore) declined to comment.

Meanwhile, Sen. Mark Mann (D-OKC) criticized the standards as politicized, warning that textbook publishers may refuse to adapt materials for Oklahoma if the curriculum deviates too far from historical facts.

State Superintendent Ryan Walters insists the changes are meant to encourage critical thinking rather than push a specific political view. However, critics argue that inserting disproven election fraud claims undercuts the legitimacy of U.S. democracy and could further politicize classrooms.

Oklahoma lawmakers have the power to approve, reject, or amend the standards before they take effect. Some in the House Common Education Committee are considering action, but it remains unclear if the Republican-controlled Senate will follow suit. A decision could come in the next 30 legislative days.
