Sen. Mitch McConnell was admitted to a hospital Sunday morning, according to a spokesperson for the longtime Kentucky Republican, raising renewed questions about the health of the former Senate GOP leader following a series of medical incidents in recent years.
” He is receiving excellent care,” spokesperson Dave Popp said in a brief statement Sunday. No additional information was released regarding the reason for McConnell’s hospitalization or which medical facility is treating him.
The 84-year-old senator had remained active in Senate business in recent weeks. McConnell participated in votes as recently as Thursday and chaired a Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee hearing focused on the Air Force budget earlier this month.
His hospitalization comes after several health-related episodes that have drawn public attention over the past few years.
Recent Health Concerns
In February, McConnell spent more than a week in the hospital after experiencing what his office described as flu-like symptoms. More recently, observers noted that he appeared at a May committee hearing with a bandaged hand.
McConnell’s most serious recent health incident occurred in 2023 when he suffered a concussion after a fall that required hospitalization and rehabilitation. Later that year, he experienced two highly publicized episodes in which he briefly froze while speaking to reporters, prompting concerns about his health and fitness for office.
In 2024, McConnell sustained minor injuries following another fall.
Despite those incidents, the senator has continued to maintain a significant presence on Capitol Hill and has remained engaged in legislative and committee work.
End of a Historic Senate Career Approaches
McConnell announced last year that he would not seek reelection in 2026, bringing an end to one of the longest and most influential careers in modern congressional history.
First elected to the Senate in 1984, McConnell became one of the most powerful Republicans in Washington, serving as Senate Republican leader from 2007 until stepping down from leadership in 2025.
During his tenure, he played a central role in reshaping the federal judiciary, advancing Republican legislative priorities, and guiding Senate strategy through multiple presidential administrations.
A childhood survivor of polio, McConnell has frequently spoken about overcoming health challenges earlier in life.
Senate Awaits Further Updates
No timeline has been provided for McConnell’s release from the hospital or return to Senate duties.
Lawmakers from both parties are expected to monitor developments closely as Congress prepares for upcoming legislative battles and appropriations negotiations.
For now, McConnell’s office has offered no additional details beyond confirming that he remains hospitalized and is receiving treatment.
