Amid a backdrop of cheering crowds and cascading red, white, and blue balloons, Vice President Kamala Harris officially became the first Black and South Asian woman nominated for president by a major party, marking a historic moment for the Democratic Party and the nation.

This milestone, celebrated with thunderous applause at the Democratic National Convention, carries the hopes of Democrats to keep the White House and defeat former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.

Harris, emerging to deafening roars from the packed arena at Chicago’s United Center, took the stage with a message focused on America’s future and her vision for a stronger middle class. After acknowledging the electric energy in the room, she called on the crowd to focus on “business,” laying out her plans to create an “opportunity economy” that would enable all Americans to thrive, no matter where they live.

“We are charting a new way forward, forward to a future with a strong and growing middle class,” Harris said, emphasizing that her personal connection to this goal comes from her upbringing. “The middle class is where I come from.”

Harris spoke about her family, the immigrant journey of her parents, and her career in public service, from her early days as a prosecutor to becoming the first woman vice president. With her characteristic warmth and conviction, she delivered the traditional line accepting the nomination on behalf of the American people.

The night was filled with performances and speeches by Democratic heavyweights and celebrities alike, with The Chicks and Pink providing musical performances and Beyoncé’s “Freedom” playing ahead of Harris’ speech.

Harris outlined her key policy priorities, focusing on reproductive rights, middle-class tax cuts, housing, and the protection of Social Security and Medicare. She also criticized the Republican Party’s stance on women’s rights, saying they were “out of their minds” and reaffirming her commitment to protecting reproductive freedom.

A central theme of her speech was her sharp critique of Donald Trump, whom she described as a threat to working Americans and an advocate for policies benefiting only the wealthy. She called out Trump for his refusal to back bipartisan border security reforms and for his controversial remarks about international allies, underscoring her dedication to upholding American commitments to NATO and supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.

Harris also addressed the situation in Israel and Gaza, affirming her unwavering support for Israel’s right to defend itself while acknowledging the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, which she described as “devastating.”

As Harris made history with her nomination, Trump responded in real time on his social media platform, Truth Social, accusing her of doing “nothing for three and a half years but talk.”

With the Democratic convention now behind her, Harris will take this momentum into the general election campaign, seeking to build on her message of inclusion, opportunity, and progress while confronting the challenges posed by the Republican ticket of Trump and Vance.
