Justice Clarence Thomas Remains Hospitalized with ‘Flu-like Symptoms’

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas remains hospitalized with ‘flu-like symptoms,’ and is being treated for an infection.

Court officials said Thomas was admitted to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC, on Friday evening after having flu-like symptoms. He was tested, was diagnosed with an infection, and is being treated with antibiotics via an IV.

“His symptoms are abating, he is resting comfortably, and he expects to be released from the hospital in a day or two,” court officials said in a statement on Sunday.

The extent of Thomas’s illness wasn’t clear, according to USA Today, but court officials confirmed that he doesn’t have COVID-19, and it’s not related to the coronavirus.

Thomas missed oral arguments on Monday.

Court officials said Thomas intends to take part in the “consideration and discussion of any cases for which he is not present on the basis of the briefs, transcripts and audio of the oral arguments.”

Thomas, 73, is the longest-serving justice on the high court. He was nominated by President George H.W. Bush in 1991 to fill the seat held by Justice Thurgood Marshall.
