The war between Israel and Iran entered its third week Sunday as Israeli forces launched new strikes on Iranian territory and the U.S. Department of Defense identified six American service members killed when a military refueling aircraft crashed over western Iraq.
Regional tensions continued to spread across the Middle East, with Saudi Arabia reporting it intercepted 26 Iranian drones, while the United Arab Emirates said it faced a missile attack. Air raid sirens also sounded in Bahrain and in Tel Aviv, underscoring the widening scope of the conflict.
In Tehran, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps vowed to “pursue” and kill Benjamin Netanyahu, according to the state-affiliated Mehr News Agency.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump told NBC News he was unsure whether Iran’s newly installed supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, was still alive following Israeli strikes that killed his father and predecessor, Ali Khamenei, earlier in the war.
“So far no one’s been able to show him,” Trump said.
Pentagon identifies six service members killed in crash
The Pentagon identified six American service members who died March 12 when a Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker refueling aircraft crashed over western Iraq.
Defense officials said the crash was not caused by hostile or friendly fire and remains under investigation, though an Iranian proxy group has claimed responsibility.
Three of the service members were assigned to MacDill Air Force Base in Florida:
-
John A. Klinner, 33, a major from Auburn, Alabama
-
Ariana G. Savino, 31, a captain from Covington, Washington
-
Ashley B. Pruitt, 34, a technical sergeant from Bardstown, Kentucky
The other three were stationed at Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base in Columbus, Ohio:
-
Seth R. Koval, 38, a captain from Mooresville, Indiana
-
Curtis J. Angst, 30, a captain from Wilmington, Ohio
-
Tyler H. Simmons, 28, a technical sergeant from Columbus, Ohio
The crash raises the total U.S. military death toll in the conflict to 13, according to Pentagon officials. Seven of those deaths were attributed to enemy fire, and eight additional service members have been seriously injured.
Israeli military expands regional strikes
The Israel Defense Forces said Sunday it had launched “a wave of extensive strikes targeting infrastructure of the Iranian terror regime in western Iran.”
The military also reported strikes on positions belonging to Hezbollah in Lebanon, including launch sites in the Al-Qataraani area and the headquarters of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force in Beirut.
Israel said the sites were being prepared for imminent rocket attacks.
Tensions escalate around Strait of Hormuz
Trump has urged international allies to deploy warships to secure the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow shipping lane through which roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply passes.
“Iran wants to make a deal, and I don’t want to make it because the terms aren’t good enough yet,” Trump said.
He called on countries including China, France, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom to help patrol the waterway after Iranian forces blocked tankers and attacked cargo ships.
So far, no country has publicly committed to the deployment, though the British defense ministry said it is reviewing options.
The United States also struck military targets on Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil export terminal, in an effort to weaken Tehran’s ability to disrupt global energy supplies.
Ukraine offers expertise on Iranian drones
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the U.S. military and several Middle Eastern countries have asked Ukraine for assistance countering Iranian-designed Shahed drones.
Speaking to journalists in Kyiv, Zelenskyy said Ukraine has developed effective defenses against the drones during the war with Russia, including electronic jamming, mobile air defenses and interceptor drones.
“This is not about being involved in operations,” Zelenskyy said. “This is about protection and assessing how we can help counter Shahed drones.”
Iranian-made drones have been used in attacks across the Gulf region and against U.S. military facilities as part of Iran’s retaliation for the U.S.-Israeli campaign.
