Former U.S. Attorney Jessica Aber Found Dead in Virginia Home

Former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Jessica Aber, was found dead Saturday morning in her home, according to local police.

Aber, 43, was discovered unresponsive at a residence on Beverly Drive in Alexandria, a suburb of Washington, D.C. Police responded to a call at approximately 9:18 a.m., where they found her deceased inside the home.

“An investigation is underway surrounding the circumstances of her death,” Alexandria police said in a statement, noting that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

A Distinguished Legal Career Cut Short

Aber, a highly respected federal prosecutor, was nominated by President Joe Biden and took office as U.S. attorney in October 2021, after being unanimously confirmed by the Senate. She led a team of 300 prosecutors and legal staff, overseeing high-profile federal cases until stepping down in January following President Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Her legal career began in 2009 when she joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, prosecuting cases related to financial fraud, public corruption, violent crime, and child exploitation.

Aber earned her law degree from William & Mary Law School in 2006, and was widely regarded for her legal acumen, mentorship, and dedication to public service.

Colleagues and Officials Pay Tribute

The legal community was shaken by the news of Aber’s sudden passing.

“We are heartbroken beyond words to learn of the passing of our friend and former colleague, U.S. Attorney Jessica Aber,” said Erik Siebert, the current U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. “She was unmatched as a leader, mentor, and prosecutor, and she is simply irreplaceable as a human being.”

Siebert praised Aber’s dedication to justice, adding:

“Her professionalism, grace, and legal acumen set the standard. Though we are devastated by this loss, each of us in the Eastern District of Virginia will look to her example and endeavor to live up to that standard.”

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares also expressed his condolences, highlighting Aber’s commitment to public safety and crime reduction efforts.

“Her work with Ceasefire Virginia saved more lives than we may ever realize,” Miyares said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family this week.”

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have not released any details about possible causes of Aber’s death, and it remains unclear whether foul play is suspected. The Alexandria Police Department is leading the investigation, and an autopsy is pending.

As colleagues, friends, and the legal community mourn her untimely death, many are remembering Aber as a tireless advocate for justice whose legacy will endure in the Eastern District of Virginia.
