Billionaire Elon Musk played a pivotal role in President-elect Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign, pouring over $250 million into pro-Trump initiatives, according to new Federal Election Commission filings.
Musk’s contributions included $20.5 million to a mysterious super PAC, RBG PAC, which launched a controversial ad campaign linking Trump to the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on abortion issues.
The RBG PAC, financed solely by the “Elon Musk Revocable Trust,” spent nearly all its funds on digital ads, mailers, and text messages. The PAC claimed Trump shared common ground with Ginsburg, a claim that drew sharp criticism. Clara Spara, Ginsburg’s granddaughter, called the ad campaign “nothing short of appalling” in a statement to The New York Times.
Trump, who celebrated the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, had previously supported a federal abortion ban after 20 weeks. However, during the 2024 campaign, he pivoted to a states’ rights position, distancing himself from a federal mandate. Critics argued that if elected, Trump and a Republican-controlled Congress could still pursue national abortion restrictions.
Musk’s contributions to RBG PAC are just the tip of the iceberg. He was the primary donor to America PAC, another pro-Trump super PAC, to which he gave $238 million throughout the election cycle, including $120 million in its final weeks. America PAC focused on canvassing, digital advertising, direct mail, and a controversial cash giveaway campaign offering $1 million daily to participants who signed a conservative petition.
This giveaway led to legal challenges. Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner sued to halt the program, calling it voter manipulation, but a state judge allowed it to continue. The Justice Department also flagged potential legal concerns but has not taken further action.
Musk also contributed $3 million to the MAHA Alliance, a super PAC promoting Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s “Make America Healthy Again” initiative.
Musk’s visible support for Trump extends beyond donations. The Tesla and SpaceX founder has become a fixture at Mar-a-Lago, advising Trump as co-chair of the “Department of Government Efficiency” initiative.
