In the wake of a new indictment filed against him by special counsel Jack Smith, former President Donald Trump shared over a dozen posts on his Truth Social network on Wednesday, calling for the trial or imprisonment of various political figures, including those who investigated the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Trump’s posts included doctored images depicting President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in orange prison jumpsuits. One particularly inflammatory post implied that former President Barack Obama should be tried in a military court.
The posts also featured references to QAnon, a conspiracy theory Trump has increasingly embraced in recent years. Among the shared messages were phrases commonly associated with QAnon followers, such as “Nothing can stop what is coming,” and “WWG1WGA” (Where we go one, we go all).
This social media activity follows Smith’s filing of a new indictment against Trump, which, while maintaining the same criminal charges, narrows the allegations due to a recent Supreme Court opinion extending broad immunity to former presidents. In response, Trump took to Truth Social, initially addressing the indictment in his own words before sharing a flurry of posts from other users, including calls for the prosecution of Smith and lawmakers involved in the January 6 investigation.
“All roads lead to Obama… retruth if you want public military tribunals,” one of the posts Trump shared read, reflecting the aggressive tone of his recent online activity. Despite advice from campaign advisers to concentrate on policy issues rather than personal attacks, Trump has continued to pursue a message of retribution against his perceived enemies.
James Singer, a spokesperson for Vice President Harris’s campaign, condemned the posts, stating that they exemplify “prosecuting political opponents, using dangerous conspiracy theories to justify harmful policies, and dividing Americans against each other.”
Trump’s indulgence in such rhetoric highlights his ongoing embrace of the far-right fringe of his political base. He has notably supported individuals jailed for their roles in the January 6 insurrection, even organizing events in their honor. Though Trump was listed as a speaker for an upcoming J6 Awards Gala fundraiser, his campaign has since confirmed he will not attend.
The posts are the latest in a series of actions by Trump that have sparked controversy and concern, particularly regarding the increasing use of extreme rhetoric as he campaigns for a potential return to the White House in 2024.
