President-elect Joe Biden has nominated Jaime Harrison as his choice for the Democratic National Committee’s new chair. Harrison is a former South Carolina Democratic Party chair. DNC members will cast their votes the day after Biden’s inauguration, January 21st.
Biden also nominated Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms as his choice for the DNC’s vice chair of civic engagement and voter protection. The nominees for the other vice chair positions are Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Senator Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, and Rep. Filemon Vela Jr. of Texas.
If elected, the nominees will serve alongside previously established members of the committee. Jason Rae is nominated to serve as secretary, Virginia MacGregor is nominated for treasurer, and Chris Korge was nominated to continue in his role as national finance chair.
“This group of individuals represents the very best of the Democratic Party. Their stories and long histories of activism and work reflect our party’s values and the diversity that make us so strong. As our country faces multiple crises from systemic racism to the COVID-19 pandemic, working families in America need and deserve real leadership. We need to elect Democrats across our country and up and down the ballot. To do that is going to take tireless leadership committed to strengthening Democratic infrastructure across our states,” Biden said in a statement.
