Former Democrat Vernon Jones Announces Challenge To Georgia Gov. In Republican Primary

Former Georgia state representative Vernon Jones announced Friday that he would challenge Gov. Brian Kemp for the state’s top job.

“For those who feel the incumbent governor didn’t fight for you, a new day has dawned,” Jones said during his announcement.

The former State House Representative and DeKalb County CEO has hinted for some time that he would pursue the Governor’s mansion.

Jones supported former President Donald Trump in the 2020 election and echoes his false statements about Trump being cheated out of winning.

Last year, Jones broke party ranks with Democrats to endorse former Trump’s reelection, saying that he was supporting Trump because of the Republican president’s handling of the economy and his criminal justice reform efforts.

“There are a lot of African Americans who clearly see and appreciate he’s doing something that’s never been done before,” Jones said at the time.
