GOP Lawmaker Urges Biden To Declare A ‘COVID-19 Vaccination Awareness Day’

New York Republican Congressman John Katko has introduced a bill calling on President Joe Biden to declare a one-time federal holiday to raise awareness about the COVID-19 vaccine and encourage people to get the shot.

Katko said “National COVID-19 Vaccination Awareness Day” would promote the rapid distribution of the shots, educate the public about the important role of vaccination for a return to pre-pandemic life, and encourage Americans to get the vaccine by promoting the safety and efficacy of the inoculations.

The holiday would also recognize the success of Operation Warp Speed and “show appreciation for the heroic partnership between government and health care stakeholders to develop effective and safe vaccines in record time.

“The fact that our nation has developed and started distributing several safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines in under a year is nothing short of extraordinary,” said Katko. “With the promise of more supplies on the horizon, we must encourage more Americans to get vaccinated while continuing to collaborate with federal, state, and local leaders to ensure rapid and equitable distribution. Americans can rest assured that there is an end in sight, and together, we will emerge from this pandemic stronger than before.”

The resolution, introduced in the House last week, proposes Biden take executive action to declare the holiday.

“The country’s battle with COVID–19 is not over, but there is reason for optimism to return to normalcy in the near future,” the resolution reads. “We are in a galvanizing moment for our country, with the promise of more vaccine supplies and better distribution avenues that will lead to a return to normalcy.”
