Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy Sentenced To A Year In Prison

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced to three years in prison for influence peddling and corruption.

Sarkozy was found guilty of trying to obtain information from a senior magistrate in 2014 when his campaign finances were investigated.

According to CNN, a Paris prosecutor requested a two-year suspended sentence for Sarkozy, his lawyer Thierry Herzog, and Gilbert Azibert. Sarkozy will serve his sentence at home with an electronic braclet moniter.

Investigators wiretapped Sarkozy and Herzog phones and found that the two men promised Azibert a top position in Monaco in exchange for information. Sarkozy was accused of accepting funds from L’Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt for his 2007 presidential campaign.

Sarkozy will be on trial again for accepting money from former Libya leader Mummar Gaddafi and violating campaign financing laws.
