Army Secretary Dan Driscoll is expected to leave the Trump administration within days after the White House accepted his resignation, according to a person familiar with the matter and a White House official.
The resignation comes after months of speculation about Driscoll’s future. NBC News reported last week that he had told close associates he wanted to leave by Labor Day. He visited the White House last week to discuss his future, according to three U.S. officials.
The Wall Street Journal first reported his resignation.
Driscoll, who has served as Army secretary since February 2025, has been viewed favorably by Republicans and Democrats and is a close associate of Vice President JD Vance.
Tensions with Hegseth
Driscoll’s departure follows disagreements with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over Army transformation and military readiness, according to a person familiar with the matter.
“Driscoll brought up concerns with the administration surrounding Army transformation and readiness and Hegseth’s blocking those efforts specifically by firing the generals who were responsible,” a source said.
Hegseth has overseen a series of high-level Pentagon departures, including Navy Secretary John Phelan and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George. He has also blocked the promotions of several senior Army officers.
Driscoll is the latest senior defense official to leave the administration as Hegseth continues reshaping the Pentagon.
The White House, however, praised Driscoll’s tenure.
“Secretary Driscoll has been highly effective in advancing President Trump’s agenda to Make America Strong Again at the Department of the Army,” White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said Monday.
She credited Driscoll with helping oversee military operations, emphasizing readiness and lethality, and assisting with negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
“The United States Army is more powerful than ever thanks to his work alongside the Commander-in-Chief and Secretary of War,” Kelly said.
The Pentagon directed questions about Driscoll’s resignation to the Army, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
