Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was hospitalized with multiple injuries, including a fractured vertebra, after a car crash in New Hampshire on Saturday evening, according to his security team.
Giuliani, 80, was riding as a passenger on Interstate 93 in Manchester when his vehicle was rear-ended at high speed, New Hampshire State Police said in a statement Sunday. Both cars were “heavily damaged,” and lanes near the scene were closed for about an hour during the investigation.
Security aide describes incident
Michael Ragusa, who identified himself as head of Giuliani’s security, said the former mayor had pulled over moments earlier to assist a woman he believed was a domestic violence victim. “He immediately rendered assistance and contacted 911, staying on scene until police arrived,” Ragusa wrote in a statement on X.
Ragusa said Giuliani was transported to a trauma center, where doctors diagnosed him with a fractured thoracic vertebra, multiple lacerations and contusions, and injuries to his left arm and lower leg.
Despite the serious injuries, Ragusa emphasized that Giuliani was “fully alert and conscious” and that doctors were “pleased with his progress.” He also dismissed speculation that the collision was intentional, writing in a separate post that the incident “was not a targeted attack.”
Others injured, no charges yet
Ted Goodman, who was driving Giuliani’s car and has previously served as his spokesperson, was also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, state police said. The other driver involved in the crash was similarly treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
“No charges have been filed at this time and all aspects of the crash remain under investigation,” authorities said.
Giuliani’s family responds
Giuliani’s son, Andrew Giuliani, acknowledged the accident in a social media post late Saturday. “Your prayers mean the world,” he wrote. “As a son, I can tell you I’m honored to have a Dad that I can call the toughest SOB I’ve ever seen!”
Giuliani, once celebrated as “America’s Mayor” after the Sept. 11 attacks, has in recent years faced mounting legal troubles tied to his work as a lawyer for former President Donald Trump. But his family and aides said Sunday that he remains resilient following the crash.
