House Speaker Mike Johnson said on Sunday that he aims to push through a comprehensive national security package this week, which includes critical aid for Israel following Iran’s unprecedented airstrikes.
Despite challenges within his party, Johnson says he is committed to advancing support for Israel and Ukraine amidst rising tensions.
Johnson, under pressure from GOP lawmakers, will attempt to unite Republicans and Democrats in supporting aid for Israel and Ukraine. He emphasized the urgency of approving the funding, particularly in response to Iran’s attack on Israel.
“We understand the necessity of standing with Israel,” stated Johnson on Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures.” “The details of that package are being put together right now,” he said. “We’re looking at the options and all these supplemental issues.”
President Biden reaffirmed the U.S.’s commitment to Israel’s security during a call with Johnson, highlighting bipartisan consensus on the need to assist both Israel and Ukraine. The White House urged the House to pass the national security supplemental promptly.
While Johnson seeks to advance the aid package, he faces opposition from conservative factions within the GOP, including calls for his removal by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. However, Johnson remains focused on delivering aid to Israel and Ukraine.
Democrats have urged Johnson to prioritize the Senate-passed bill, which includes significant funding for Ukraine and Israel. Most House Democrats support this approach, emphasizing the urgency of providing assistance to Ukraine.
Representative Henry Cuellar, a Texas Democrat, expressed his willingness to support House Speaker Mike Johnson and thwart any attempt to remove him from office, provided that Johnson advances the Senate bill, which includes aid for Israel, Taiwan, Ukraine, and reasonable border security measures.
Cuellar stated, “I’m one of those who would save him if we can do Israel, Taiwan, Ukraine, and some reasonable border security.” His remarks underscore the importance of addressing multiple security concerns, including supporting key allies like Israel and Taiwan, as well as providing aid to Ukraine, while also implementing measures to enhance border security. Cuellar’s stance reflects a bipartisan effort to prioritize national security interests and work towards a comprehensive solution to address critical challenges facing the nation.
