Iran attacks Israel

Iranian Missiles Strike Israel: Escalating Tensions and International Response

In a dramatic escalation, Iranian missiles struck Israel on Saturday, raising fears of deadly clashes between the two nations. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported that drones launched from Iran were en route to Israel and expected to arrive within hours.

IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari confirmed that Iran had launched numerous missiles, most of which were intercepted by Israel’s defense systems. However, some missiles landed in Israel, causing minor damage to an IDF base in the southern region. Hagari stated, “Only one little girl has been hurt.”

In response to the attack, Israel called for an emergency meeting at the U.N. Security Council. Iran’s U.N. mission issued a statement warning that if Israel made another “mistake,” Iran’s response would be “considerably more severe.”

Despite this statement, a U.S. defense official revealed that U.S. forces in the region continued to intercept Iranian-launched drones targeting Israel.

The attack came after an Israeli airstrike in Damascus killed a senior Iranian officer, prompting Iran to retaliate. U.S. and Israeli officials had been anticipating such a response, fearing it could escalate tensions in a region already strained by conflicts like the Israel-Hamas clashes in Gaza.

In anticipation of the attack, Israel had closed schools, banned large gatherings, and shut down its airspace. The IDF remained on high alert, with planes ready in the skies, and maintained close coordination with the U.S.

President Joe Biden cut short a weekend vacation to return to Washington and meet with the National Security Council principals in the situation room. The White House affirmed its unwavering support for Israel’s security, stating, “Our support for Israel’s security is ironclad.”

The U.S. has been actively countering Iranian-backed threats in the region, targeting proxies in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condemned Iran’s “reckless” attack, emphasizing the UK’s commitment to Israel’s security.

Sen. Roger Wicker, the highest-ranking Republican on the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, stressed the importance of standing with allies against shared enemies, urging resolute action against Iran’s aggression.

“This is the moment for the United States to show we stand together with our allies,” Wicker said in a statement. Our shared enemies, including Iran and their proxies, need to know our commitment is unwavering. We must join with Israel to ensure that Iran’s aggression is met with resolute action and resounding strength.”
